Fish River Canyon Hiking Trail - 2
The first part of the trail to Palm (sulphur) Springs takes two days to accomplish. The first leg of the trail to Palm Springs is considered in line with completing the trail to Ai-Ais in five days. It is important to realize that this is the most rugged part of the trail and takes time to negotiate. There is plenty of boulder hopping to be done and pools of water to find ones way around. Palm Springs Palm Springs is the site of a sulphur spring that gushes out of the earth at a constant temperature of 57 degrees. There are Date palms that grow around the spring which give rise to the place name. This is an ideal place for a break but hikers normally don't camp here due to the stench of the sulphur.  | Every seven years since 1994 something extraordinary occurred either in the heavens or on earth. |
| That something extraordinary will therefore occur in 2015. |
| That the extraordinary events of 2015 will be the Solar Eclipses and Blood Red Moons calculated by the NASA scientists. |
| That the Solar Eclipses and Blood Red Moons of 2015 are related to what is described in Joel 3:3, “The sun will be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the LORD comes.” |
| Should the foregoing conclusions be valid, then the most likely time for the Great Tribulation to occur will be during the 3½ years that precede 2015. |
If you haven't visited the two above-mentioned studies yet, I strongly recommend that you take time to do so at your earliest convenience. To know that the 1994-2015 Timeline is based on the following four extraordinary events, each separated from the next by seven years, will suffice for this study.
1994: The comet Shoemaker-Levi 9 broke up and crashed into Jupiter with what was then described as 21 cosmic gun salutes.
2001: The September 11 (9/11) World Trade Centre & Pentagon terror attacks in America.
2008: The Global Financial Collapse with its epicentre in America, also described as the worst financial crisis of its kind in human history, hit the world on 15 September.
2015: Blood Red Moons Phenomenon of the years 2014-2015, the only time in this century when 4 consecutive full lunar eclipses, known as a tetrad, will coincide with the Jewish religious feasts of Passover and Feast of Tabernacles.
In the Introductory Remarks above I have inferred that the most likely time for the Great Tribulation appears to be the 3½ years that precede 2015.
In Revelation 12:6 & 14 we read that God will hide some of His people in a wilderness for 3½ years. Does Scripture tell us where that wilderness is located?
I believe Scripture gives us some very clear indications where to look for that wilderness.
Before we investigate those clues, it is important to note that Rev. 12:6 & 14 speak of only one place which has been prepared for those destined to survive the Great Tribulation.
What about people living on other continents? Does this mean they will all have to relocate to this one place of refuge? Can't one hide anywhere on this planet? Won't each continent have its own place of safety? What will happen to a person who seeks refuge in the Amazon Rain Forest, the Grand Canyon or the Australian Outback? Aren't these excellent hiding places? Just one place? How absurd!
Yes, accepting that God will hide His people at only one place on earth will not go down well with many people.
However, I believe Scripture teaches that God will make it possible for His people to withdraw to the place of safety through large-scale airlifts during a divinely appointed window period. We read in Rev. 12 that "two great wings like an eagle were given to the woman that she might fly into the wilderness to her place" (v. 14).
Now where is this wilderness located?
Around 2700 ago the prophet Isaiah proclaimed,
"Beyond the rivers of Ethiopia there is a land where the sound of wings is heard" (Isa 18:1, GNB).
A century later the prophet Zephaniah announced,
"From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia, my worshippers, even the daughter of my dispersed people, will bring my offering" (Zeph 3:10, HNV).
These verses are directing us towards Southern Africa. But before we go there, let us see what Scripture tells us to look for.
In Isaiah 35 we read about a wilderness that bears some of the most prominent features of the Promised Land.
"The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad; the desert shall rejoice and blossom like the crocus;
it shall blossom abundantly and rejoice with joy and singing. The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, the majesty of Carmel and Sharon. They shall see the glory of the LORD, the majesty of our God" (Isaiah 35:1-2).
Please take time to read the entire chapter. I believe the prophet's usage of the word "there" towards the end of the chapter indicates that this wilderness is located outside the Promised Land.
And a highway shall be there, and it shall be called the Way of Holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it. It shall belong to those who walk on the way; even if they are fools, they shall not go astray.
No lion shall be there, nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it; they shall not be found there, but the redeemed shall walk there."
Further confirmation that this wilderness is located outside the Promised Land is given us in Ezekiel 20.
34. I will bring you out from the peoples and gather you out of the countries where you are scattered, with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, and with wrath poured out.
35. And I will bring you into the wilderness of the peoples, and there I will enter into judgment with you face to face.
36. As I entered into judgment with your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt, so I will enter into judgment with you, declares the Lord GOD.
37. I will make you pass under the rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant.
38. I will purge out the rebels from among you, and those who transgress against me. I will bring them out of the land where they sojourn, but they shall not enter the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am the LORD."
Verse 38 tells us that those with a rebellious spirit will perish in a wilderness outside the Promised Land just as their counterparts did during the first exodus four thousand years ago.
Is there a wilderness in Southern Africa that resembles the Promise Land and bears a name that corresponds with the description "wilderness of the peoples?" (Ezekiel 20:35).
Yes, there is! It is the wilderness area called Greater Namaqualand located in the Northern Cape of South Africa and southern Namibia.
Does this vast area bear a name that corresponds with the description "wilderness of the peoples?"
Yes, it does! The "qua" in Namaqualand means 'people.'
Namaqualand, home of the Nama and other KhoiSan peoples, means "Land of the Nama peoples."
The Nama/KhoiSan peoples are pastoral people of South Africa, Namibia and Botswana; and one of the principal branches of the Khoi-khoi race. Their traditional language is called Nama. Please visit Wikipedia, the free encyclopaedia on the Internet, for more information on these once mainly nomadic peoples who have inhabited this area for thousands of years.
Does this vast area resembles the Promise Land?
Yes, it does!
We have seen in Isaiah 35 that this wilderness located in a remote part of South Africa is intended to be a mirror-image of the Promised Land. Is it?
To reconstruct what Isaiah saw, imagine you are placed on a large globe representing the earth. See yourself standing by the equator in Africa . You are facing Israel, which you are able to see clearly from where you are standing beyond the rivers of Ethiopia. Standing on the equator looking north-easterly you will see that the Promised Land is demarcated by the following four beacons:
| Farthest from you, in the north, the Lebanon with its snow-capped peaks and cedar trees; |
| in the west along the Mediterranean coast, the sandy plains of Sharon renowned for its flowers; |
| in the east, the Judean wilderness where the Messiah was tempted, and |
| nearest to you, in the south, the copper mines of Timna near the coastal town of Eilat (Deut. 8:9). |
Now turn around and look in a south-westerly direction. With your back to Israel, you'll be looking straight at the Northern Cape of South Africa. Still standing on the equator, looking south-westerly, you will see that the Northern Cape is demarcated by the following four beacons:
| Farthest from you, to the south of this province, the Cedarberg Mountains with its snow-capped peaks and cedar trees; |
| in the west along the Atlantic coast, the sandy plains of Namaqualand renowned for its flowers; |
| in the east, the desolate Karoo, and |
| nearest to you, in the north of this province, the copper mines of Springbok, Okiep and Nababeep. |
Here's a pictural portrayal of the astounding similarities between the Northern Cape of South Africa and the Land of Israel.
This is then what Isaiah saw 2700 years ago. Do you also think it's a mirror-image of the Promised Land? Did you know it is the only place on earth that represents the Promised Land in this manner? Furthermore, it is exactly where Scripture tells you to look for it - beyond the rivers of Ethiopia (Zeph. 3: 10)!
Why did Isaiah refer to it as "a land where the sound of wings are heard?"
I believe there are two possible reasons.
| Firstly, South Africa is the country with the best-developed air force and air service beyond the rivers of Ethiopia. |
| Secondly, according to
Birdlife South Africa, this country ranks as one of the top birding or
birdlife
destinations in the world [Birdlife South Africa:
www.birdlife.org.za]. Its lush forests,
marshes, freshwater lagoons, flooded grasslands, tidal estuaries and acacia
woodlands support an impressive display of birds. Apart from the resident
birds, South Africa hosts a number of intra-African migrants such as cuckoos
and kingfishers, as well as birds from the Arctic, Europe, Central Asia,
China and Antarctica during the year. Imagine how these marshes and
estuaries must have teemed with birdlife 2600 years ago when Necho,
Pharaoh of Egypt, a contemporary of the prophets Jeremiah and
Zephaniah, sent an expedition of Phoenician mariners and explorers, and
maybe even Hebrew scholars, to the country Isaiah a century earlier had referred to as 'a land
where the sound of wings are heard.' |
Closing Remarks
I've mentioned the prophet Zephaniah's name earlier on. Do you know what the name Zephaniah means?
It means "whom Yah will hide by covering over."
Where?
The prophet already told us 2600 years ago!
"From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia, my worshippers, even the daughter of my dispersed people, will bring my offering" (Zeph 3:10, HNV).
