A mysterious place 'beyond the rivers of Ethiopia'

About 2600 years ago the prophet Zephaniah spoke about a mysterious place 'beyond the rivers of Ethiopia' from where the chosen people would bring their offering to the Almighty in the end times (Zeph. 3:10). Then again, other Hebrew prophets of ancient times spoke about a wilderness to which the Almighty would bring His called-out ones in the last days. He'll speak to them there  as He spoke to His people during the exodus from Egypt. This wilderness gathering will take place while war is raging in the Middle East. Ezekiel gave us a crucial clue concerning this wilderness when he referred to it as 'the wilderness of the peoples.'

"I will bring you out from the peoples and gather you out of the countries where you are scattered, with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, and with wrath poured out.

And I will bring you into the wilderness of the peoples, and there I will enter into judgment with you face to face.

As I entered into judgment with your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt, so I will enter into judgment with you, declares the Lord GOD."

(Ezekiel 20:34-36)

It is our belief that these two prophets, as well as other prophets like Isaiah, Hosea and Jeremiah, referred to the same place beyond the rivers of Ethiopia which belongs to its people and that's a mirror-image of the Promised Land.

The wilderness of the peoples unveiled

All the indicators are pointing to Great Namaqualand in the Northern Cape of South Africa and southern Namibia as that mysterious place the Hebrew prophets spoke about 2600 years ago. In the passage below we read that Namaqualand means 'land of the Nama peoples.' Most of this land is communal farm land. According to the South African Land Act 9 it is held in trust by the State for the people. The land is under management of the communal ward committees, who again are under direction of the local municipalities.

An brief overview of the history of the Nama people

Namaqua (Nama People)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Namaqua (Namaqua means Nama people) are a pastoral people of South Africa, Namibia and Botswana; one of the principal branches of the Khoikhoi race, and inhabiting Great Namaqualand. Their traditional language is called Nama, but most now speak Afrikaans.

For thousands of years, the KhoiSan peoples of South Africa and southern Namibia maintained a pastoral way of life, tending their flocks of goats and sheep, gathering firewood, and collecting wild honey.

Following the discovery of diamonds at the mouth of the Orange River in the 1920s, however, prospectors began moving into the region, establishing towns at Alexander Bay and Port Nolloth, a process that

accelerated the appropriation of traditional lands that had begun early in the colonial period. Under apartheid, remaining pastoralists were encouraged to abandon their traditional lifestyle in favour of village life.

The Nama, thought by some to be the true descendents of the Khoikhoi, have much in common with the San (Bushmen), sharing the same linguistic roots and features. For this reason they are often collectively referred to as Khoisan.

The Nama people originally lived around the Orange River in southern Namibia and northern South Africa. The early colonialists referred to them as Hottentots.

As with the San, the Nama have light skin, and a small delicate frame. Nama people speak a language that is unrelated to any other African language. It is often referred to as a “click language” because many of the words are expressed with unusual clicking sounds. This language is shared with the San and is known as the Khoisan group of languages.

In general the Nama practice a policy of communal land ownership.

Music, poetry and story telling are very important in Nama culture and many stories have been passed down orally through the generations. The Nama have a culture that is rich in the musical and literary abilities of its people. Traditional music, folk tales, proverbs, and praise poetry have been handed down for generations and form the base for much of their culture. They are known for crafts which include leatherwork, skin karosses and mats, musical instruments (such as reed flutes), jewellery, clay pots, and tortoiseshell powder containers. Nama women still dress in Victorian traditional fashion. This style of dress was introduced by missionaries in the 1800s and their influence is still a part of the Nama culture today.

Today, the Richtersveld National Park is one of the few places where old ways survive. Here, the Nama still move with the seasons and speak their ancient tongue, one of the vanishing KhoiSan, or “click,” group of languages. The traditional Nama dwelling - the |haru oms, or portable rush-mat covered domed hut - is a reflection of a nomadic way of life, offering a cool haven against the blistering heat of the sun, yet easy to pack and move if grazing lands become scarce. In 1991, a portion of Namaqualand, home of the Nama and other KhoiSan peoples and one of the last true wilderness areas of South Africa, became the Richtersveld National Park. In December 2002, ancestral lands, including the park, were returned to community ownership and the governments of South Africa, Namibia, and Angola embarked on the development of a transfrontier park along the west coast of southern Africa, absorbing the Richtersveld National Park. - (Wikipedia)

Goal of Land Acquisition

Our aim with land acquisition is the establishment of an informal network that comprises 12 self-sustaining eco-settlements at various remote locations among the pristine mountainous valleys and isolated small farming villages along the Orange River in the Northern Cape of South Africa and Southern Namibia. These 12 self-sustaining eco-villages will be linked by a 4x4 route.

Methods of Land Acquisition

  1. Purchasing of private land.
  2. Leasing of private land.
  3. Leasing of communal land through integrated partnerships with local communities.
  4. Land acquired by special arrangement with authorities for development in remote areas for the uplifting and empowering of marginalized rural communities.

Current status of Land Acquisition

  1. Thus far families concerned have preferred to acquire land individually, or collectively with other families of their choice.

  2. Land has only been acquired on South African side.

  3. The land was acquired by leasing of communal land through a partnership with the local community.
