For the undertaking to be financially viable, it is a central objective of the Northern Cape Eco-Living Cooperative Network that new members will become integrated into the network economy, augmenting and enriching it by both bringing business expertise and capital with them, and by using their skills and insight to identify economic problems and find suitable solutions for local informal economic development, thereby creating new enterprises based on the socio- environmental advantages and marketing opportunities provided by the Northern Cape Eco-Living Cooperative Network.
In anticipation of war in the Middle East, the ensuing global economic meltdown, and the emergence of a global restricted trading system, major movements from a mainstream economic environment to a detached economic environment, and from national or regional economic development to local economic development in which free and fair trading is paramount, are envisioned.
There is a lot of merit in the following statement from another sustainable community's website:
"By acting together as a community Village members have created opportunities which are simply not open to people operating as isolated individuals at the mercy of a mainstream economic system whose sole interest in us is as fodder for the insatiable appetite of the growth economy. We are creating our own financial structures designed to enable our community to gain at least some independence from the financial agents of what I call the Global Monetocracy - the economic/political system which currently dominates the world. We have taken the opportunity to minimise the profits which a bank or other financial institution would make at our expense ... Thus the Village is part of a peoplepowered response to today's extreme neo-liberal economy, in the tradition of the co-operative and mutual movements of the past, which were responses to the rampant capitalism of the industrial age." - (John Jopling, The Village).
Finally, to attain sustainable cooperative economic development, alleviation of the poverty problem and the underdeveloped informal rural economy of the locality should be accommodated in development planning wheresoever possible.
