4 EXPERIENCE DETAIL
Own enterprise 1992-Now
Manager of his own enterprise called Dr Loot J Gous.
In December 1992 he started his own enterprise. This business mainly focused
on Computer Application Systems Development. He mainly developed computer
systems in Magic running on a Wide Area network using the Oracle database on
a contract basis. Magic is an Object-Oriented Code free Application development
4+ generation system capable of running on top of some relational SQL databases.
Magic is suitable for systems from small PC applications to LANS to high
end Unix applications using the same system if required. The language is
highly popular in the United States to downsize from mainframes to Lan
environments. He does the analysis of systems required as well as the design and development
of these systems in Magic. Other work undertaken in this enterprise
is writing articles on Technology and Personal Finance in the business
section of the Afrikaans Sunday newspaper Rapport.
Uniserv group 1990-1992
Information Technology Director of Sun Couriers (Pty) Ltd and Burlington
Express
In July 1990 he left the Motorvia group and started working at the Uniserv
group. He reported to the group chairman. He was appointed as Information
Technology Director of Sun Couriers (Pty) Ltd and Pyramid Freight (Pty)
Ltd. Pyramid Freight was run as three separate companies: Burlington Air
Express, Burlington Export Express and Burlington Ocean Express. Sun Couriers
was an express parcel delivery company with branches all over SA. Burlington
was a freight import/export agent. Data processing of Burlington Export
Express branches under his control was in RSA, Botswana, Malawi, Zambia
and Zimbabwe. In Uniserv he was in control of a data processing staff of
45 that was reduced to 30 over two years. Eleven different sizes Data General
MV mini computers and 3 DG desk top models were controlled on a decentralised
basis. Linked to these computers were 222 terminals, 225 PC's, 217 printers,
66 modems and 28 muxes on a countrywide X.25 network. The value of
this equipment was approximately R 7 mil. The data processing budget was
this equipment was approximately R 7 mil. The data processing budget was
approximately R 500 000 per month.
Motorvia group 1974-1990
Director of Budget Rent a Car, of Motorvia (Tvl) (Pty) Ltd and
Executive director of Dumarson (Pty) Ltd.
In November 1987 he was appointed as director of Budget Rent a Car. In
1988 he was appointed as director of Motorvia (Tvl) (Pty) Ltd. In 1989
he was appointed as Executive Director of Dumarson (Pty) Ltd the company
controlling the Motorvia group's information systems department.
Part time lecturer at the Rand Afrikaans University 1988
During 1988 he was part time lecturer at the Rand Afrikaans University
in the subject: Management information systems for the degree M Com (Business
management). The RAU equivalent of MBA.
Group information systems manager 1987-1990
In March 1987 he was promoted to information systems manager of the Motorvia
group. He reported to the executive chairman of the Motorvia group of companies.
In this position he managed the data processing function of the Motorvia
group that included Budget Rent a Car. During this time they upgraded systems
and migrated them to one large system A10 mainframe computer of Unisys.
About 350 terminals and 40 printers were handled on a country wide network.
The value of this equipment was approximately R 12 mil. The Data processing
budget was approximately R300 000 per month.
Accounting and systems manager 1984-1987
In October 1984 he was appointed as Accounting and systems manager of Budget
Rent a Car (Motorvia at that stage held 50 percent of Budget's shares).
He reported to the managing director. In this position he was among other
things responsible for the following:
- the development of computerised real time on line and fully
integrated administrative, operational and management information systems
and
- the administration of the accounts department of Budget Rent
a Car. The accountant with a staff of 15 reported to him.
Various fully integrated real time on line systems were developed in
Cobol on a Unisys mainframe and implemented for Budget Rent a Car. Computer
systems like:
- a countrywide reservations system (integrated with debtors)
that printed contracts before the rental countrywide at the branch where
the car was rented,
- a countrywide vehicle movement control system that indicated
exactly where every vehicle in the fleet was every moment of the day,
- a decentralised invoicing system that automatically optimally
priced and invoiced every contract, and was fully integrated with debtors,
- a centralised debtors system that printed consolidated statements
for all rentals countrywide and collected some accounts monthly automatically
via ACB of the banks,
- a centralised creditors system that automatically interfaced
(together with the debtors system) to the general ledger system,
- a centralised general ledger system,
- a vehicle damage monitoring system and
- a vehicle service monitoring system.
Personal assistant of the executive chairman 1984-1984
In January 1984 he was appointed as the personal assistant of the executive
chairman of the Motorvia group of companies with the specific instruction
to develop fully integrated and consolidated real time on line financial
information systems for the group that took into consideration the group's
decentralised management requirements and style. This general ledger and
creditors system was adapted from a package and were successfully implemented
on a centralised mainframe.
Administrative manager 1983-1984
In April 1983 he was appointed as administrative manager of Motorvia Transvaal
at Weswoodpark. (Staff 10). In this capacity he reported to the Transvaal
managing director. The accountant of Motorvia Transvaal reported to him.
Group data processing manager 1982-1983
He was data processing manager from May 1982 until April 1983. (Staff 20).
He reported to the group chairman. He was responsible for the total
data processing function of the Motorvia group. The group then had a Burroughs
(now Unisys) small system mainframe.
Group management accountant 1979-1982
In January 1979 he was appointed as group management accountant. He reported
to the group chairman. He was responsible for the production and
accuracy of various group reports that were produced on a new mainframe.
He worked very closely with the computer department. In his own time
he taught himself to programme in Cobol and wrote various programmes.
Programmer 1977-1979
From August 1977 he worked as programmer at the Wynberg (Johannesburg)
office of Motorvia (Tvl) (Pty) Ltd. He reported to the Managing director
of Motorvia (Tvl). He analyzed and programmed various systems in the "Basic"
programming language and implemented these on a small desktop Hewlett Packard
computer. These systems included among others a wage system, a vehicle
cost control system, a claims control system and a monthly profit and loss
summary report system.
Assistant accountant 1976-1977
In August 1976 he was appointed as assistant accountant of the Transvaal
head office in Rosslyn. He reported to the Transvaal accountant.
He was responsible for the administrative systems of all the Transvaal
depots. He was in control of systems like wages, debtors and creditors.
(Staff 3).
Administrative manager 1974-1976
In 1974 he started working for Motorvia (Tvl) (Pty) Ltd as administrative
manager of the Kaalfontein depot (2 staff members reported to him).
He reported to the Transvaal Operations manager. Motorvia was a motor
transport company that delivered vehicles from the factory to the dealers.
They had approximately 70% of the total SA vehicle transport market. Here
he created and implemented various new administrative systems for the depot.
