South Africans love sport! Rugby, cricket and soccer
are the most watched sports but
it is
possible to do almost any sport in South Africa - the
climate is perfect and the nation loves the outdoors.
There are more than 400 golf courses in
South Africa
and is home to multiple major winners
Bobby Locke, Gary Player, Ernie Els and Retief Goosen.
Tennis is also very popular and South
Africa has produced successful tennis players on the
international circuit.
The
country
has a rich sailing history, and boasts some top
international events. Chief of these is the South
Atlantic Yacht Race – originally known as the Cape to
Rio, currently as the Cape to Bahia – the longest
continent-to-continent yacht race in the southern
hemisphere.
Thirty-five South African fighters have won 49 world
boxing titles between them - including "road warrior"
Brian Mitchell, whose record 12 title defences were
fought almost exclusively abroad, and "Baby Jake"
Matlala, with four titles in three weight divisions.
