In this day and age of DNA this gives breeders an advantage for breeding healthier dogs and
not eliminating bloodlines or valuable dogs with genetic bank that produce the correct type.
In the early days of test breeding for genetic defects it was not a 100% clearances on the dog.
Many breeding programs had to work with a number that the Breeders could work with --
without depleting their valuable brood bitches. Therefore it lowered the percentages of producing
the defected gene but the possibility of it showing up in future years was still there. Today with the Studies
going on at the AKC Canine Health Foundation a 100% certainty of mapping a gene is possible
and not only helps the breeder but the Breed as a whole!
In the big picture of things DNA will help all CANINES not just a pure bred dogs.
In my breed the Alaskan Malamute many top breeders and Judges support the American Kennel Club
Canine Health Foundation sponsoring many studies that are going on today. The must important one at
the time of this writing is the Genome which will help break the code of other studies going on for all the defected genes.
My success with fund raising for our dogs is only possible because of the people who love the breed.
Whether its just the family pet owner---Obedience --- Working or Show person.
This will benefit all of us --- But it will benefit The Alaskan Malamute more!!
