I hold an unrestricted South African class
"A" amateur radio operator's license with
the call-sign ZS1AGH.
The interest in
wireless originated at a very tender age in my
bedroom, which also served as my late father's radio
shack. He got his license (A1C or D) before ZS
was used then ZS in 1927 (first ZS1AV operating from
Cape Town, Piketberg and Nababeep, later ZS4AY
operating from Kimberley and Upington and still later
ZS3V operating from Oranjemund, South West Africa).
I never
developed an ambition to become a train driver like
the rest of the youngsters of my age. As far
back as I can remember, I wanted to be a wireless
mechanic. That is what I did. I know
nothing about radios.
