Since 1972 when I was a broom sweeper (marshal) at the Brandkop Raceway (Bloemfontein) on weekends, I fell in love with these cars. Ten years later I got myself this one.

It looked nice in white, but there's only one colour for an Alfa, so eventually I changed it to red.

Since I have seen the first 4-Runner (visitor from Mozambique) in Nelspruit 18 years ago, I always wanted one - a small affordable Land Cruiser. 4-Runner is called Surf in countries like Australia and New Zealand.The few used Surfs that I found for sale locally were either 3L petrol which didn't interest me, or early models manufactured and used for 5 years or more than the date of first registration in South Africa. If you see a 1995 model for sale in South Africa it can be manufactured in 1990 and used since then. There are a few things on a Surf to look at to make sure of the manufacturing date. 

Toyota Condor, another Soweto Pajero (Toyota Venture). The Condor was Toyota SA's answer to a Surf. This beats me! There are Surfs all over Africa. Surely it is good enough for South Africa?

But finally Toyota SA came to their senses with the release of the Fortuner. The bakkie version looks terrible, however. I've heard comments like: "It looks like an old tekkie", and "like an old man with trousers pulled up to his armpits". 

And after all these years a Land Cruiser 70.
