Responding to a Takeout
Double at the 3-level

OKB.    IMPís.     Board 239.     Week ending 30 November.

Your side is vulnerable. Your left hand opponent opens a preemptive 3 . Partner doubles. What do you bid with -

I held that hand. My partner was clueless. We were playing against Fernando and shif. I decided that one needs better trumps to leave the double in, so I bid 3NT. I bought it there.

The hands were -

  NORTH
J 10 8 2
K Q J
5
A K Q J 3

  WEST
6 3
9 4 3
A Q 10 9 7 4 2
8
EAST
A K 9 5
10 7 5 2
K
10 9 4 2

  SOUTH
Q 7 4
A 8 6
J 8 6 3
7 6 5

The lead was a diamond, and East won the king. East made the top spades later, and I claimed 4.     Routine, I thought.....

Not so !!!     We received + 9.49 IMPS !!!   Wow.

I do a "scores" search and I was quite surprised to see the variety :

This hand became more intriguing when I inspect the layout and wonder if 3Dx always goes down.   Can you decide ?

As a double-dummy problem, how can 3Dx be made?

Yep, to make 3Dx, you need to make ALL seven trumps in your hand plus the two top spades in dummy.

There is no other way.

Hope that the club ace is followed by another club. You, of course, ruff it. Trump to dummy, and another club ruff. Test the trumps now. If they had broken, you would have claimed. They do not. No matter.

Spade to ace, club ruff. Spade to king, and exit a heart. Now light up a cigarette, stretch your legs, and wait - for them to concede the 10 to you - either by playing a diamond, or by giving you a ruff.

You have taken nine tricks.     Hee hee.
