Dr Shelley Hellig, provides a Travel Clinic in Paarl & Franschhoek, South Africa

Dr Hellig is licensed to provide comprehensive travel medicine advice and immunisations including
the yellow fever vaccine, rabies vaccine & malaria prophylaxis.

It is a staggering to realise that one billion people on the planet travel annually. This is one sixth of the world´s population!

Thus has evolved a whole new branch of medicine-the science of "Travel Medicine" since it has been discovered that travellers have special needs and unique situations requiring specialized care.

It is an exciting new field-one which I have embraced and studied and found to be fascinating.

Malaria prophylaxis is vital when visiting most countries in Africa. It is a dangerous myth that it is easier to diagnose it without prophylaxis. Rabies, likewise, requires prophylaxis and that includes Rabies immunoglobulin. If left untreated it is a disease that is 100% fatal.

My practice is now a registered Travel Clinic and, as such, can offer the full spectrum of immunizations and travel medicine advice. I possess a YELLOW FEVER VACCINE LICENCE enabling me to administer and stock the vaccine. It is generally a good idea to consult a registered travel medicine doctor about 6 weeks prior to a proposed trip. There are certain immunizations that need to be given long before departure and some that cannot be given together.

There are also the issues of crime, trauma and food and water borne diseases, to name but a few problems facing the intrepid traveler.

Travel should be a wonderful, happy experience - my job is to ensure it does not turn into a nightmare.
