Day 07: Liuwa Plains (07-10-2004)

Daily Summary:

Today was a rest day for the group, although the very high  temperature of around 42ºC made it an uncomfortable day.

They spent most the day on maintenance.  Anton finally found two little holes in his troublesome tyre, apparently from a pinching action when he drove over a tree stump two days ago.  These were plugged and it looks like the tyre is now holding air.

Anton and Jan have been having problems with their 29 MHz radios throughout the trip.  The radios were opened today and a number of dry joints on both radios have been repaired with a gas soldering iron.  It seems like these problems have now been solved, although it will be proven tomorrow when they travel further to Lukulu.

A jerrycan of diesel was poured into each of the vehicles, with one jerry remaining as a contingency until they get to their next fuel stop.

They took one vehicle on a 20km game drive this afternoon and were met by meter-high grasslands that stretched for as far as the eye can see.  Blue wildebeest still abound, but they were intrigued by significant numbers of an antelope they couldn't identify.

It was described as follows and some help to identify it would be appreciated:  It has an exceptionally long neck and its body colour resembles that of a springbuck, but on its back its more like an impala.  It has a proportionally small head with very tiny horns, much like a steenbok.  Any suggestions on what this may be?

Tomorrow they will be travelling some 100km to Lukulu.

Highlights:

The game drive;

Last night's supper: rare steak and chops;

While travelling the plains, an unidentified bird flew through an open window straight into the car, and out again!

Whe darkness fell tonight, a hyena came to within 20m of their fire.  Alet fled straight into the rooftop tent and proclaimed that she is not moving from that position tonight!

Lowlights:

The heat!

Alet was least impressed with this afternoon's lunch: bully beef, peas, feta and mayonnaise.
