STARSHIPS OVERVIEW
Starships are the crux of the game. Starships allow you to explore the galaxy, to conquer neighbouring planets, to defend your own planets, and to battle with and destroy your enemy's starships. Without a fleet you cannot defend yourself, and you cannot expand your territory. Note that concepts such transport ships, colony ships, etc are abstracted in the game. All starships are essentially combat ships.
The following table shows the required level of nanotechnology for each ship type in the game.

Starship Design
1. Heavier ships generally have more design slots, allowing more components to be fitted to the ship.
2. Each design slot allows for the addition of a single component (hull armour, engine, shield, stealth nodes, sensor nodes, beams, missiles, fighters).
3. Small and light ships generally have bonuses to their engine and stealth slots, while larger ships have bonuses to their armor, shields, weapon damage and sensors.
4. Improving your technology levels improves the bonuses imparted by various components.
5. Higher technology components are also more expensive the lower technology components.
6. The total cost of the ship determines how long it will take to build the ship (modified by nanotechnology level).
7. Once designed and built, you may clone the design for as many ships as you can afford.
8. To gain the benefit of new technologies, you must design and build new starships. Old starships cannot be upgraded.
Fleets
1. Groups of Starships may be assembled into fleets.
2. Sufficiently large fleets gain a strength bonus, up to a maximum of 10%.
3. Fleets may be assigned officers. As the officer gains experience, so the perofrmance of the fleet is enhanced.
4. Ships within a fleet impart bonuses to each other if there are sufficient ships. See ship bonuses.
5. Species Ships (Uniques) impart bonuses to ships in the same fleet up to a maximum of 20 ships for each unique.
