SHIPS OF THE LINE

If you have 25-275 ships of the line with at least 55 sensors and 3 weapon slots, they will impart a damage bonus to ESCORT SHIPS and CAPITOL SHIPS.

Destroyers - Sensor bonus to other Ships of the Line, requires 45 sensors and 2 weapon slots, minimum 35 ships.
Cruisers - Damage bonus to other ships of the Line, requires 50 sensors and 3 weapon slots, minimum 30 ships.
Carriers
Battle-Cruisers

Advantages
Ships of the line offer the broadest range of options available in fleet design. Destroyers are relatively fast and stealthy, while Battle-Cruisers and Carriers have very high firepower and good accuracy. On the whole, Ships of the line are inexpensive, and also offer a very high amount of damage for their cost. Because you can get the maximum spread of evasion and firepower out of this class, it potentially offers the best means of exploiting the targeting system used in the game. Build a fleet of high damage carriers or battle-cruisers covered by at least as many (or much more) cheap light destroyers with high speed and stealth, and low damage. Even class-targeting will not be able to ignore the destroyers, and with luck, the enemy will waste a lot of their firepower.

Disadvantages
Ships of the Line may offer high firepower and versatility, but they are also relatively fragile individually. Except for the heaviest ships in the class, they are vulnerable to Minefields, and facing a relatively equal resource investment of capital ships, they will be destroyed in short order.

Damage bonus to ESCORT SHIPS and CAPITOL SHIPS
1. Imparts a damage bonus to SOTL and Capital Ships.
2. A bonus damage amount is calculated separately for each weapon type (beam, missile, fighter).
3. Size of the bonus is the average damage of the qualifying ships, plus 0.1% per ship after the first 25, up to 275 ships of the line.
4. If the bonus amount is greater than the existing damage of the receiving ship, then its damage is set to the bonus amount, with a maximum increase of 17.5% for capitol ships and 10% for escort ships, over their existing damage.
5. If the bonus amount is between 45% and 100% of the existing damage, then a fraction of the bonus is applied depending on the number of contributing ships.
6. If the bonus amount is less than 45% of the existing damage, then no bonus is applied.

Illustration
1. Lets say you have a battle-cruiser with beam-damage 250 which otherwise meet the requirements (55 sensors and 3 weapon slots).
2. If you have 25 of these battle-cruisers, then the 'bonus amount' is 250 beam-damage. If you have 275 of these battle-cruisers then the 'bonus amount' is 312.5 beam-damage.
3. Assuming a 'bonus amount' of 250 beam-damage, if you have a battleship with 150 beam-damage, it will do 175.5 damage (Max allowed increase is 17.5%).
4. If your battleship did 220 beam-damage to begin with, its final damage would be 250 (the bonus amount, since this is within the 17.5% allowed increase).
5. If your battleship did 300 beam-damage to begin with, its final damage would be 322 (the bonus amount is within thr 45%-100% range, and a fractional portion of 17.5% is imparted.
6. If the bonus amount was less than 45% of the battleship's base damage, no bonus would apply.
